Did
you know... ?
When you hear the word "trampoline", what picture comes to
your mind? Children jumping up and down on the backyard trampolines, laughing
and having lots of fun with their friends? This is the idealistic picture
that trampoline manufacturers and retailers would like to have you see.
In reality, the picture often turns out to be a very different
one. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, frequency and severity
of injuries resulting from the use of trampolines is significant and increasing.
A trampoline is not a toy.
In 1996, the latest year for which data is available, over
83,000 people sought emergency room care for trampoline related incidents.
The majority of these injuries were from using trampolines at a private
residence.
Trampolines are inherently dangerous; there are a number
of different ways for injuries to occur. Many injuries occur because the
user lands incorrectly while jumping or doing stunts. Others occur while
falling off the trampoline, hitting the springs or frames, or colliding
with another jumper. In fact, more than half of the injuries occurred while
two or more people were using the trampoline.
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers this sound advice
for parents:
- Do not have a trampoline at your home.
- Do not allow your children to use a trampoline at someone else's home.
The majority of trampoline injuries occur with children. The compolete
